Urdu as the primary language from the first screen — not a settings toggle bolted onto an English-first app.
Urdu is spoken and read by tens of millions of people across Pakistan, yet a huge share of the mobile news apps available to them are built English-first, with Urdu treated as an afterthought — a translated menu bolted onto an app that was never actually designed for right-to-left script or the reading habits of Urdu-first users.
Urdu Akhbar was built the other way around: Urdu as the primary language from the first screen, not a settings toggle. It brings together the latest Urdu news updates, local weather, and market-aware home surfaces in one fast, easy-to-read place — for readers who think and read in Urdu first.
The problem
Talking to Urdu-reading news consumers surfaced a consistent set of frustrations with apps that never treated Urdu as the default.
- Many Urdu news apps rendered text awkwardly — inconsistent RTL alignment, poor font rendering, or Urdu content squeezed into English-first layouts
- News, weather, and daily updates were often spread across separate apps, forcing readers to jump between them throughout the day
- Article loading was slow on lower-end devices and inconsistent mobile data common across much of the audience
- Urdu content was buried behind categories and menus not organized around how Pakistani readers browse — by region, category, and what’s trending now
Designing Urdu-First, Not Urdu-Translated
RTL as a layout system, not a font choice
Right-to-left text affects layout direction, icon placement, text alignment, and how UI components mirror across the entire interface. Full RTL support was built in from the start, not patched onto an English-first design.

Urdu Akhbar is an Urdu-first iOS news reader: RTL layout and typography are defaults across feed, article, menu, and settings. Home combines trending cards, weather, and important news; category and trending surfaces organize national, regional, world, sports, business, and entertainment. Article detail supports read, listen, and offline save. A local cache keeps recently loaded articles usable when data drops. What I’d do differently
- I would invest earlier in a dedicated content/CMS layer for original and editorial packages rather than leaning only on third-party feeds.
