Overview

Three puzzle moods, one daily habit — word guessing, phrase/search play, and knot untangling without needing three apps.

Most brain game apps pick one mechanic and stick with it — a word game, or a logic puzzle, or a path-untangling game — and players end up with three different icons to cover three different moods.

Word & Knot was built to solve that by combining genuinely different puzzle mechanics in one app: word guessing, word search / phrase-style play, and knot untangling (square grids and hex boards). Same daily habit, same streak, same shop for hints — but distinct ways to engage depending on whether someone wants a quick word challenge or a hands-on path puzzle during a break.

The problem

Looking at the brain game category before building Word & Knot, a few consistent gaps stood out.

  • Single-mechanic puzzle apps hit a ceiling — once a player masters or gets bored of the one loop, there’s less reason to keep opening the app
  • Many puzzle apps require a constant connection even for basic play, which breaks commute and flight sessions
  • Ad-heavy monetization often interrupts solving so frequently that the puzzle experience suffers
  • Parents looking for genuinely family-safe brain games often have to dig through reviews because “family-friendly” labeling isn’t always reliable

Designing Three Games as One Cohesive App

Level 01

One habit, multiple rooms

Bundling three unrelated mini-games under one icon is easy. The harder problem is a shared home, daily play, streak, shop, and settings layer so switching modes feels like rooms in the same house.

Level 02

Offline as a product requirement

Puzzle content, progress, and daily play run on-device so a weak signal doesn’t kill the “quick game on the train” use case.

Level 03

Family-safe by curation

Word and search content is curated for shared family use rather than dumping an unfiltered public dictionary into the game.

Architecture & tech stack

Word & Knot is a SwiftUI multi-mode puzzle client with a shared home for mode select, daily play, shop, and streak. Word-guess uses local clue/keyboard puzzles; word-search uses category grids and timers; knot modes use square knot-flow and hex boards where players connect matching colored knots. Generators and dictionaries ship on-device so all modes play offline. Progress and streak state stay local; hints and boosts come from a unified shop rather than separate currencies per mode.

Three games, one app

Word guessing, word search / phrase-style play, and knot untangling (square + hex) — different mechanics under one daily habit and progress system.

Engineering challenges & solutions

Solution

Shared home chrome, streak, shop, and visual language across modes so the puzzles stay distinct while the surrounding experience feels consistent.

Results

  • Published on the App Store as Word & Knot Puzzle: Brain Game
  • Multi-mode offline play: word guess, word search, square knot-flow, and hex knot puzzles
  • Daily challenges, streak tracking, and a shared hints/shop economy
  • Family-oriented positioning with dark mode and curated content

What I’d do differently

  • I would lock the shared streak/shop layer before finishing every mode variant, so the unifying loop stays consistent from day one.
  • Knot difficulty curves (square vs hex) deserve earlier tuning from real session-length data.
  • Difficulty tiers or expandable puzzle packs would help retain players who clear daily content quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

All puzzle content and the daily challenge generator run entirely on-device, so no internet connection is needed to play word, search, or knot modes.
